Bach in the mirror

In the year marking the 300th anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach’s appointment as cantor of St. Thomas’ Church in Leipzig, the National Youth Choir of Germany embarked on a journey through the legacy of one of history’s most frequently performed composers. Its concert programme, “Bach im Spiegel”, juxtaposed Bach's double-choir motets with significant works from 20th-century choral music by György Ligeti, Arnold Schönberg, Caroline Shaw, and Dieter Schnebel. The German Music Council has also commissioned a new work for the occasion. In her vocal composition “Jesu, my Delighting”, the English composer Roxanna Panufnik offered a contemporary exploration of Bach’s motet “Jesu, meine Freude” (BWV 227). Founded in 2021 under the auspices of the German Music Council, the National Youth Choir of Germany made its Hamburg debut with this concert. It has also performed the programme at the Bachwoche Ansbach, St. Thomas’ Church in Leipzig, Bamberg Cathedral, Musikalischer Sommer in Ostfriesland, and the Bachfest Eutin-Plön.
